SECTION 1: Understanding Money
This section helps readers understand the current monetary system before introducing the Second Value Protocol (SVP).
Money isn't a natural thing like gold or gravity - it's a social technology, a set of human agreements about how to represent and exchange value, and like any technology it can be designed to serve everyone or to quietly serve the few who control it.
It's tempting to think of money as something fixed and given - a permanent feature of how economies work. It isn't. Across human history, money has taken radically different forms, and each form reflected the power structure of the society that created it.
The earliest money was commodity money - cattle, grain, salt, silver, gold - things with real, intrinsic value you could eat, wear, or use. When communities were small and trade was local, money was concrete: everyone could see and understand where value came from.
As trade grew, representative money emerged - paper receipts backed by gold held in a vault somewhere. This was more convenient, but it introduced a subtle risk: the paper was now one step removed from the thing it represented.
In the twentieth century, that link was cut entirely. Fiat money - currency worth something purely because a government declares it legal tender - replaced money backed by physical reality.
And underneath fiat money sits the layer that shapes modern economic life more than any other: credit money. Today, the overwhelming majority of money isn't printed by governments at all - it's created by commercial banks each time they issue a loan, and it comes into existence as debt (see Question 2 and Question 4).
Each of these transitions was a deliberate design choice, not an inevitability. Understanding that money is designed - and can therefore be redesigned - is the starting point for everything the Second Value Protocol proposes.

1. What is money?

Most people believe money comes from governments printing it, but in reality the great majority of money in circulation is created by ordinary commercial banks the moment they issue a loan.
The story most of us were taught goes like this: you deposit your savings in a bank, the bank holds some in reserve, and lends the rest out to other customers. The bank is simply a middleman, matching savers with borrowers. This story feels intuitive — and it's largely wrong.
In 2014, the Bank of England published research explaining, in plain terms, that this is not how modern banking works. When a bank approves your mortgage or business loan, it does not search its vaults for spare cash to hand you. It creates a brand-new deposit in your account, out of nothing, at the moment the loan is signed. That new deposit is new money entering the economy. Your original deposit, meanwhile, is untouched - you can still spend it. Both amounts are real. The total money supply has simply grown.
This is why the old idea of "fractional reserve banking" - banks lending out a fraction of what savers deposit - is misleading. In most advanced economies today, formal reserve requirements have been reduced to near zero or eliminated altogether. What actually limits a bank's lending is its capital requirements and its own appetite for risk, not the deposits sitting in its vault.
The practical result: banks are not passive pipes moving existing money around. They are the primary source of new money in the economy - a private, profit-driven function operating with remarkably little public understanding or democratic oversight.

3. Who creates most of the money in modern economies?
It isn't governments or central banks - the majority of the money supply is created by private, profit-seeking commercial banks through their everyday lending decisions.
This surprises most people, because the popular assumption is that the government - or the central bank on the government's behalf - controls the money supply. In reality, central banks like the Federal Reserve or the Bank of England create only a small fraction of the money in an economy: physical cash and the reserves banks use to settle payments with each other.
The rest - the vast majority of money that exists as numbers in bank accounts - is created by commercial banks: JPMorgan, Wells Fargo, HSBC, and thousands of others, every time they approve a loan. The old textbook model taught that central banks controlled the money supply by adjusting a "base" amount, which commercial banks then multiplied. The Bank of England's own 2014 research corrected this: the direction of cause and effect actually runs the other way. Commercial banks decide how much money to create through their lending decisions, and central banks largely accommodate that by supplying whatever reserves the system then needs.
In practical terms, this means the amount of money in your economy - and how it's distributed - is determined by thousands of individual, private lending decisions made by profit-motivated institutions, not by any democratically accountable body making decisions on behalf of the public.

4. Why is most money created as debt?
Because of how commercial banks create money - every new loan simultaneously creates a matching deposit - which means, at a systemic level, that almost every dollar in existence began its life as somebody's debt.
This is one of the most important and least understood facts about modern money. When a bank issues a loan, it isn't handing over money that already existed. It is creating new money and, in the same instant, creating an obligation to repay it. The two things are inseparable: the money and the debt are born together.
Scale this up across an entire economy, and the implication is striking: the dollars sitting in your bank account, the money you use to buy groceries or pay rent, exist because someone, somewhere, took out a loan. When you spend money, you're effectively passing along a debt-token. There is no meaningful category of "debt-free" money circulating in a modern credit-based economy - it is debt nearly all the way down.
This wasn't planned as a grand design by any single architect. It evolved gradually - from goldsmiths issuing more gold receipts than gold they actually held, to the modern banking system that formalized and industrialized that same basic trick. But the consequence is the same regardless of how it emerged: an economy whose entire money supply is structurally tied to the growth of debt, with real consequences for who benefits and who bears the risk (see Question 5).

5. Why does debt continue to grow over time?
Because banks create the principal of a loan but never create the interest owed on it, so the total debt in the system is mathematically guaranteed to exceed the total money available to repay it, requiring constant new borrowing just to keep the system functioning.
Here's the arithmetic at the heart of the problem. Say a bank creates a loan of $100 at 10% interest. It creates exactly $100 of new money - the principal. But the borrower owes $110. Where does that extra $10 come from? It has to come from somewhere else in the economy - from other borrowers who are themselves trying to repay principal plus interest on their own loans, competing for a total money supply that was never large enough to cover everyone's obligations simultaneously.
This isn't a temporary glitch that better policy could fix. It's a permanent structural feature of a debt-based monetary system: there is always more debt owed than money exists to repay it. The only way the system avoids constant, cascading defaults is if new loans keep being created fast enough to inject the additional money needed to service old ones. That's why economies built on this model require continuous growth just to stay stable (see Question 7) - and why periodic debt crises, like 2008, aren't unfortunate accidents. They're the predictable output of the underlying math.

6. Why is inflation such a persistent problem?
Inflation persists because, since 1971, money has had no anchor to physical reality at all - its creation is limited only by political will and bank lending decisions, both of which have structural incentives to keep expanding the money supply.
For most of the twentieth century, the US dollar - and by extension much of the global financial system - was still loosely tethered to gold. That link imposed at least some discipline: you could only issue as many dollars as your gold reserves could plausibly back. In August 1971, President Nixon suspended the dollar's convertibility into gold, severing the last formal connection between money and physical reality. From that point on, the only real constraints on money creation were institutional appetite and political will - both of which tend to expand rather than contract.
Since then, we've seen two separate but related drivers of inflation. The first is the more familiar story: governments or central banks expanding the money supply faster than the real economy grows, most dramatically visible during the trillions of dollars created through quantitative easing after the 2008 financial crisis. The second, subtler driver is built into the credit money system itself: because debt must keep expanding to cover the interest owed on existing debt (see Question 5), the money supply has a built-in upward bias.
Inflation, in other words, isn't simply a matter of governments being careless. It's a structural feature of a monetary system with no physical anchor, operated by institutions whose incentives don't reliably align with long-term price stability for ordinary people.

Because debt-based money only avoids collapse when new borrowing keeps happening fast enough to generate the additional money needed to cover interest on existing debt - which means growth isn't a policy goal, it's a survival requirement.
It's often said that economic growth is simply desirable - a sign of prosperity and progress. Under the current monetary system, though, growth isn't optional. It's structurally mandatory. As explained in Question 5, every loan creates a debt slightly larger than the money it generates, because interest is owed but never created alongside the principal. The only way the system avoids a wave of defaults is if new lending continuously injects fresh money to make those interest payments possible.
This means the debt-based system needs to keep expanding - indefinitely - just to remain stable, regardless of whether that expansion is ecologically sustainable, socially beneficial, or even physically achievable on a finite planet. When growth slows, as it inevitably does in real economic cycles, the mathematical pressure doesn't disappear - it surfaces as defaults, foreclosures, and financial crises.
This is a very different thing from saying growth is bad. It's saying that our current monetary architecture doesn't give us a choice about whether to pursue growth - it manufactures growth as an existential necessity for the system's own survival, independent of whether that growth actually improves people's lives (see Question 13, Section 2).

8. Why do governments continue borrowing?
Under the current system, governments don't create their own money directly - they raise it largely by issuing bonds and paying interest to private lenders, which means financing anything at scale, from wars to infrastructure, tends to happen through borrowing rather than direct money creation.
It might seem strange that a government - which has the legal authority over its own currency - would need to borrow money at all. But under the modern arrangement, most governments deliberately separate their spending from their money creation, financing deficits primarily by issuing bonds to private investors and paying them interest over time, rather than creating money directly and risking the political consequences of being seen to "print" it.
Historically, this pattern has repeated in moments of large, hard-to-tax spending. Financing the Vietnam War partly through monetary expansion instead of politically difficult tax increases was one of the key pressures that led to the US abandoning the gold standard in 1971 (see Question 6). More broadly, once an economy is built on continuous debt expansion at every level, government borrowing becomes just one more layer of that same system - governments compete for money in the same fundamentally debt-based pool that households and businesses do, and pay interest to the private financial institutions that hold their bonds.
The result is a structural relationship in which governments - nominally the most powerful economic actors in a society - are themselves dependent on, and indebted to, the private financial system.

9. Is the current monetary system inevitable?
No - every feature of today's monetary system, from central banking to debt-based money creation, was the product of specific historical choices and institutional decisions, not a law of nature, which means it can be redesigned.
It's easy to assume that the way money works today is simply how money has to work - an inevitable feature of any modern economy. The historical record tells a different story. Commercial banking's ability to create money arose from a specific, traceable sequence of choices: seventeenth-century goldsmiths who realized they could issue more gold receipts than gold they held, the formal chartering of the Bank of England as a private, for-profit institution, the deliberately secretive drafting of the US Federal Reserve Act by the very bankers it would go on to oversee, and Nixon's 1971 decision to sever the dollar's last link to gold.
None of these were unavoidable engineering requirements. Each was a decision, made by specific people, in specific circumstances, that could plausibly have gone differently - and that overwhelmingly served the interests of those doing the designing.
Recognizing this matters enormously, because it reframes the entire conversation. If the current system were a neutral, inevitable feature of economic life, reform would mean nothing more than tinkering at the edges. But if it's a designed system - one that reflects particular interests and could have been designed differently - then a genuinely different design, built on different principles, becomes not just possible but legitimate to pursue. That's the starting premise of the Second Value Protocol.

10. Has money always worked this way?
No - money has changed form dramatically throughout human history, from tangible commodities to gold-backed paper to today's debt-based system, and the current arrangement is a relatively recent development, not a timeless constant.
For most of human history, money was something physical and tangible - grain in ancient Mesopotamia, cattle across much of the ancient world, silver and gold coins in classical and medieval economies. Its value was visible and largely self-evident: you could eat the grain, use the metal, or trade the livestock. The connection between someone's productive effort and their wealth was legible to everyone around them.
The shift toward the abstract, debt-based system we live under today happened gradually, over roughly three and a half centuries. It began with seventeenth-century goldsmiths quietly issuing more paper gold-receipts than gold they actually held. It was formalized by the founding of the Bank of England in 1694 - which, remarkably, operated as a private, profit-seeking corporation for 252 years. It was extended to the United States through the Federal Reserve's creation in 1913. And it was completed in 1971, when the US severed the dollar's last tie to gold, leaving the entire global monetary system floating on institutional confidence and legal compulsion rather than physical reality.
So no - the debt-based, bank-created money we use today is not how money has "always" worked. It's the current chapter in a much longer, still-unfolding story, and like every chapter before it, it reflects a specific set of choices made by specific people with specific interests. Understanding that history is what makes it possible to imagine - and build - a different chapter next.
